Toyota Research Institute – Advanced Development, Inc. | Dynamic Map Platform Co., Ltd.

TOKYO & DETROIT (March 17, 2020) — On March 17th, 2020, Toyota Research Institute – Advanced Development, Inc. (Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo, CEO: Dr. James Kuffner, “TRI-AD”) and Dynamic Map Platform Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo, President: Hiroyuki Inahata, “DMP”) have agreed to a partnership to build a proof of concept (“PoC”) applying the technologies of both companies starting April 2020. This PoC aims to demonstrate the efficient update of DMP’s high definition (“HD”) maps by using TRI-AD’s open software platform, Automated Mapping Platform (“AMP”) to detect and process changes in lane-level road features based on images and other data collected from vehicle sensors.

Demand for high-accuracy and high-quality HD maps for automated driving has been growing with the increased use of automated driving and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). It is essential for map building to capture changes in roadway attributes accurately and quickly, and update the maps with high efficiency. The conventional approach detects lane-level changes through on-site surveys using expensive survey vehicles and typically based on planned road construction notices. In this PoC, TRI-AD’s image recognition technology automatically detects changes based on image data collected by commonly available cameras. By helping focus the survey fleet only on areas of change as they occur, it is expected to demonstrate a significant reduction in the cost of operating the fleet and an acceleration of the map update to users including automotive manufacturers.

TRI-AD and DMP will demonstrate the ability to update DMP’s HD maps with an improved efficiency using the automatic change detection technology by TRI-AD’s AMP based on images and other data of roadways in Japan. Aiming to start operation from fiscal year 2021, this PoC will study methods to further improve the frequency of HD map updates, and consider the use of AMP to update map data by Ushr, Inc. (a DMP Group company) that supplies its HD maps in North America.

Mandali Khalesi, Vice President of Automated Driving at TRI-AD said:

“I am delighted to collaborate with DMP, an industry leader in the development and management of high-quality HD maps through automotive manufacturers collaboration, on a map update system using AMP technology. This collaboration enables us to provide up-to-date map data for automotive manufacturers and other users, and accelerate technology development for AMP. Through this PoC, TRI-AD hopes to be able to offer safe and secure automated driving technology to users across the world.”

Hiroyuki Inahata, President at DMP said:

“DMP Group is the leading supplier of HD maps for passenger vehicles in Japan and North America because of its exceptional data accuracy. Now, we seek to maximize the usability of mapped roads by capturing small changes in road elements. With TRI-AD’s AMP change detection technology, DMP Group can improve the coverage and cycle times of map updates. I also believe that this effort will help improve the map update service for all of our clients. We are excited to work together with TRI-AD to extend AMP to other automaker ecosystems. The result will be lower data acquisition costs and better HD map quality for everyone.”

With 2018 Cadillac CT6, Ushr Becomes the First-to-Market HD Map Provider in a Production Vehicle

DETROIT (Oct. 18, 2017) Ushr Inc., creator of high-definition (HD) mapping technology and software for autonomous and semi-autonomous vehicles, today announced that its precision HD map platform has been implemented in the new Cadillac Super Cruise™ hands-free highway driving feature. With the recent release of the 2018 Cadillac CT6, Ushr also becomes the first-to-market provider of HD mapping technology in an OEM production vehicle.

The HD mapping data provides high accuracy and high quality road information that, when combined with the real-time data from cameras and GPS sensors, ensures Super Cruise can operate on limited access highways, while also providing smooth control through curves, enhancing user comfort.

“We are incredibly excited to be working with automakers like GM and Cadillac on the future of hands-free driving,” said Bruce Gordon, Ushr CEO. “Super Cruise™ is the first assisted driving technology that will use Ushr’s precision LiDAR map data in addition to real-time cameras, sensors and GPS.”

In 2013, numerous test drives traversing hundreds of miles were completed comparing vehicle performance using the Ushr mapping technology and other competitor platforms. The test results showed Ushr significantly outperformed the competitive alternatives and the Ushr platform was chosen, in part, due to the critical need for enhanced accuracy to ensure passenger safety.

“Ushr’s HD mapping plays a critical role in assuring that Super Cruise operates as promised,” said Jon Lauckner, Chief Technology Officer, General Motors.  “We knew at a very early stage that high-definition mapping was critical for Super Cruise and there were few companies who could provide reliable data and that’s why GM Ventures invested in Ushr.”

Using high precision LiDAR technology, Ushr has mapped all road features of every mile of limited-access highway in the U.S. and Canada to under four inches in a global coordinate frame. Ushr will collect roadway changes on an ongoing basis and provide frequent updates to GM.

ABOUT USHR

GeoDigital Spin-Off to Focus on HD Mapping Technology for Autonomous Vehicles

DETROIT (Sept. 18, 2017) Ushr Inc., creator and provider of the most precise, high-definition (HD) mapping technology and software for autonomous and semi-autonomous vehicles currently available, today announced that it has secured $10 million in Series A funding, commensurate with its spin-off from GeoDigital, Inc. Forté Ventures led the investment round with participation from EnerTech Capital, Emerald Technology Ventures, and GM Ventures.

Drawing on more than 20 years of experience in mapping engineering structures, power lines, railways and roadways, the Ushr team spent the past three years developing the first production HD map software for autonomous driving. Now having mapped the entire U.S. and Canada controlled access highway network with under four inches deviation, Ushr’s platform provides the most accurate long and medium-distance sensing systems to enable autonomous vehicles (AVs) to safely navigate roadways.

“Ushr provides a long-range view that allows the vehicle to proactively plan safer routes and anticipate roadway changes instead of merely reacting to sensor inputs,” said Bruce Gordon, Ushr CEO. “In a recent road test comparison, our nearest competition had dozens of lane touches and several crossovers; our maps had zero touches and zero crossovers.”

Ushr’s HD mapping technology in combination with vehicle sensors and on-road cameras conveys  “real world” detail to AVs. The company’s control algorithms are constantly interpreting and communicating key details from sensors to the vehicle control system, allowing for more precise steering, safer vehicle control and directional predictability.

The technology currently applies to Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) but has a role in every stage of development within the autonomous driving technology spectrum. Presently, Ushr is working with major automotive manufacturers and suppliers, including General Motors (GM), to integrate Ushr software and map technology into future products.

“Ushr’s mapping data is an important piece of GM’s technology as we work on the path toward self-driving vehicles and these kinds of innovations bring us closer to that vision,” said Sherwin Prior, Managing Director at GM Ventures.

The Series A investment will allow Ushr to advance the development of lower cost data acquisition technologies and of automated map production using artificial intelligence techniques; to build a fleet of data collection vehicles; and to test in-vehicle software on automotive grade embedded hardware.

ABOUT USHR

Ushr, Inc. is shaping the evolution of autonomous vehicle navigation by providing the most precise, high-definition mapping technology and software for autonomous vehicles on the market today. By interpreting and communicating street view navigation, Ushr enables autonomous vehicle passengers to travel from Point A to Point B as safely and as efficiently as possible. Founded in June of 2017, Ushr is a spin-off of GeoDigital, Inc. and is based in Detroit; for more information, please visit ushrauto.com.
